The recent update from the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) sheds light on the improving situation for flood evacuees across three affected states in Malaysia. As of noon on Monday, the number of individuals seeking refuge in temporary relief centers has decreased to 1,122 people spread across 13 centers. This marks a decline from the earlier count of 1,483 individuals housed in 15 centers, signifying progress in the ongoing relief efforts.
The most notable decrease is observed in Kelantan, where the number of evacuees has significantly dropped to 1,034 individuals accommodated in nine relief centers. This is a notable decrease from the earlier count of 1,395 people across 11 relief centers. Specifically, the relief centers in Kelantan are distributed across various areas, including six centers in Tumpat sheltering 744 individuals, two in Pasir Mas with 274 occupants, and one in Kuala Krai accommodating 16 individuals.
Pahang reports a steady number of evacuees, with 34 individuals seeking shelter in two relief centers situated in Maran. Additionally, 87 victims affected by the landslide incident in Cameron Highlands continue to be housed in a dedicated relief center.
In Johor, the count of evacuees remains consistent, with 54 individuals seeking refuge in two relief centers located in Segamat as of the latest report.
While the decrease in evacuee numbers is a positive development, concerns regarding the water levels in several rivers persist. The Department of Irrigation and Drainage's assessment highlights three rivers—Sungai Pulai in Johor Bahru, Johor; Sungai Golok in Pasir Mas, Kelantan; and Sungai Arau in Arau, Perlis—that are currently at alarming levels. Among these, Sungai Pulai has recorded a reading of 4.76 meters on an upward trend, emphasizing the need for continued monitoring and preventive measures. However, Sungai Golok in Pasir Mas shows a decreasing trend at 9.33 meters, while Sungai Arau in Arau, Perlis, also demonstrates a downward trend at 23.74 meters.
Moreover, the report identifies 27 road closures resulting from flooding, damaged bridges, and landslide incidents. Key affected roads include Jalan Kota Tinggi-Kluang in Kluang, Johor; Jalan Sungai Sok-Chucuh Puteri in Kuala Krai, Kelantan; Jalan Raya Timur Barat (JRTB) Kupang-Gerik in Hulu Perak, and Jalan Kuala Lumpur-Bentong (Jalan Lama Bentong) in Pahang.
The comprehensive update underscores the concerted efforts to manage the aftermath of the floods, with a notable decrease in evacuee numbers while simultaneously acknowledging the persistent challenges posed by rising river levels and road closures. Continuous monitoring and swift action remain imperative to ensure the safety and well-being of affected communities as the situation evolves.
