Kota Kinabalu: Football proves that it is more than just a game as it also serves to elevate individuals, including amputee players, to greater heights.

Former Rhinos coach Mohd Asyraaf Abdullah, who was elected to lead the newly formed Sabah Amputee Football Association (Peboks), said this after chairing their first meeting on February 8 following registration with the Malaysian Sports Commissioner on May 17.

“Amputee players exhibit extraordinary fighting spirit. They prove that physical limitations are not barriers to success; rather, it is mental strength and determination that define their achievements.

He vowed to give his best to strengthen the association and develop the sport to reach a much higher level and achieve excellence.

AdvertisementHe said the association initially started in 2023 had successfully clinched the national title held in Johor last year after their debut appearance a year earlier.

He added they have drawn up various programmes for 2025 and urged more support and assistance from the public in their effort to develop the sport.

AdvertisementHe also said all the posts in the new committee for 2025-27 term were elected unopposed.

He is supported by deputy president Amoster Alex Henry Peter and vice president Muhammad Faizul Taha.

The Secretary is Mohd Shazliansah Wung Sang assisted by Slybister Justin and the Treasurer is Dr. Frederick Josue @ Mohd Fadhil Abdullah with Shauki Nazri Rasmin as his assistant.

The committee members are Eddy Jamilih, Louis Simon, Roger Daguk, Fatnee Sardun, Mohd Azhar Shamsudin@ Jr, while the auditors are Noratiqah Alfia and Syairah Asilah Zakaria.

Meanwhile Dr Frederick, who is the senior lecturer at the Faculty of Education and Sports Studies in Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), said the association will play a major role in highlighting the significant health benefits of engaging in football.

“From a health perspective, participation in sports like football has a tremendous impact on amputee players. Physical activity helps improve stamina, muscle strength, and body coordination.

“It also reduces the risk of diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure while enhancing mental health by stimulating the release of endorphins, as well as serving as a natural therapy for reducing stress and developing psychological resilience, especially for individuals who face physical challenges.

“Amputee players not only benefit from sports for their physical health but also build emotional and mental resilience.

“They stand as symbols of inspiration, proving to society that true strength is not measured by the body but by an unyielding spirit,” he said.
