From a 60th birthday to wedding anniversaries, some Malaysians share a special bond with Aug 31, celebrating family milestones alongside Merdeka.
PETALING JAYA: For millions of Malaysians Aug 31 is a day to celebrate the nation. But for some, Merdeka Day carries an even more personal meaning as they mark birthdays, wedding anniversaries and cherished family traditions alongside the country’s independence.
For Wan Azleen Abd Rahim, Aug 31 is also her birthday.
Wan Azleen who turned 60 yesterday said she felt “happy and proud” to share her birthday with Merdeka.
A former financial adviser and housewife, Wan Azleen is now involved in network marketing.
Over six decades, she has witnessed Malaysia transform from the simple country of her childhood into a modern nation shaped by rapid development, technology and changing lifestyles.
For her, some of the most cherished memories are of growing up in the 1970s and 1980s when neighbours knew one another and communities looked out for each other.
“Childhood life was simpler, deeply community-driven. Neighbours knew each other and children back then were highly outdoorsy.”
She remembers close-knit families and neighbours who readily looked after one another. By the 1990s, however, smaller nuclear families became more common as economic pressures grew. Wan Azleen has witnessed significant progress in healthcare, infrastructure, education and career opportunities.
“Basic survival struggles have been replaced by high living standards.”
Yet, she feels Malaysia has lost some of its semangat kampung – the trust, neighbourliness and shared responsibility that once brought communities together. Her schooldays at Convent Bukit Nanas remain a cherished memory.
“I don’t remember my classmates being racist. We all sat together during recess and shared meals..” She believes the simpler way of life of her youth has gradually given way to stress, materialism and a “non-stop digital rush”.
As Malaysia celebrated another Merdeka yesterday, she urged younger Malaysians to think carefully before sharing information online and to remember the sacrifices behind the country’s progress.
“I hope they stop and think before posting on social media.
“Check whether the news is fake or true.” She also urged them to remember the sacrifices that shaped the nation.
“Remember our history – and not because you need to pass your exams.”
For Meera Loganath, 39, a teacher, and Hahsvin Murugaiah, 41, a project manager, Aug 31 carries another kind of milestone.
Yesterday marked their 12th wedding anniversary, while Meera’s parents celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.
The couple chose Aug 31 for their wedding because it coincides with her parents’ anniversary.
“We’ve been married for 12 years, so Aug 31 has always been special to our family.
“We get to celebrate our marriage, my parents’ marriage and Merdeka together, so it has become a very meaningful day for our family,” Meera said.
Her memories of growing up are rooted in Malaysia’s multicultural fabric. She studied and played alongside people of different races and backgrounds, sharing food and celebrations without dwelling on their differences.
“One of the biggest values I have carried from my parents is that relationships should come before labels. You get to know a person as a person first.”
However, she believes society has become faster and more individualistic.
She recalls a time when neighbours would freely visit, share food and look out for one another.
“Technology has connected us in many ways, but ironically, I think it has also made some of us less connected to the people physically around us.”
