Portugal's big cities may grab headlines every now and then, but there are small towns that are evergreen and increasingly becoming new favourites for travellers around the world. Whether you want to visit or settle, these 5 small towns are worth checking out!

Portugal has a way of stealing hearts like no other place in Europe. Over the past few years, it has become a dream European destination for travellers worldwide to come, visit and eventually make it their home. When people think of Portugal, they usually picture Lisbon's yellow trams, Porto's riverside charm, or the sun-drenched beaches of the Algarve. While these cities are popular and rightly so, the real charm of Portugal lies in small towns that offer a much richer, more local, and more liveable experience. Interestingly, these are also towns that expats from around the world are rushing to.

Behind medieval walls, along quiet rivers, and beside stretches of coastline, there are small towns that offer a different side of Portugal, one that is untouched by mass tourism. A new report by International Living suggests that these small towns are far more affordable, walkable, and offer a chance to find a place that feels like home away from home. They also have the classic Portuguese charm, so you won't ever miss big cities.

Óbidos

One of Portugal's best-preserved medieval towns, Óbidos is in central Portugal. In 1282, it was gifted to Queen Isabel by King Dinis I after she fell in love with it; hence, it is called the 'wedding gift' or 'wedding present town.' It has whitewashed houses, cobbled lanes, castle walls, and sits close to Lisbon. A time capsule, the entire town enclosed by fortified walls. It also has the UNESCO Creative City of Literature status. Óbidos is more than just a pretty town; it has a personality. There are bookshops in unexpected places, festivals throughout the year, a medieval market, and the well-known ginginha served in chocolate cups.

Tomar

Another central Portugal gem, Tomar feels less like a town and more like the setting of a historical novel. It was built by the Knights Templar and is home to the Convent of Christ, the town's great artistic and cultural landmark. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has a rich religious and architectural heritage with historic squares, churches, and riverfront walks. As Portugal's most important historical town, it balances history with everyday livability.

Tavira

One of the Algarve's most graceful towns, it stands apart from the region's other popular destinations. It's timeless, sophisticated and a great alternative to the Algarve's crowded beach towns. Located on the banks of the Gilão River, the town is full of whitewashed houses and tiled facades, with Moorish influences throughout its architecture. With a Roman bridge at its centre, it is one of the most picturesque towns in the Algarve. People are attracted to Tavira because of its protected beaches, natural landscape and a slower pace of life. Expats love its authentic charm and practical conveniences.

Caminha

An inviting border town, Caminha in northern Portugal, is a forgotten riverside gem where Portugal and Spain sit side by side. It sits at the mouth of the Minho River, where Portugal meets Spain. This fortified town was once the site of battles between the two countries. The old centre still has a strong medieval hold, and traditional Portuguese architectural elements remain a highlight. The mix of quietness and connection makes Caminha an excellent spot for expats. Atlantic beaches are nearby, and you get river, mountain, and ocean scenery in one destination.

Viana do Castelo

Portugal's most underrated coastal city, Viana do Castelo, has deep ties to the sea, dating back to the Age of Discoveries and cod fishing. Expect traditional manor houses and churches as you walk through the city. The old centre gathers around Praça da República. At the same time, Santa Luzia hill offers one of the city's best-known views, along with a view of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. For expats, Viana combines city comforts with a small-town feel. The views from Santa Luzia are often considered among the finest in Portugal, stretching across the city, river, and Atlantic coastline.
