JASIN – A school canteen operator was left stunned after RM749 in sales money went missing at a boarding school here last Tuesday.
Canteen operator Nur Liyana Abdul Khalid, 30, said a staff member realised at about 9.30pm that the money from the afternoon sales session between 2pm and 5pm was missing.
She said CCTV footage showed a male student wearing a grey kurta, black trousers and a kopiah climbing over the counter before taking the money kept beside the cash box.
“The student initially said he only took RM5, but after being questioned several times, he admitted to taking RM749, as shown in the CCTV footage.
“My staff member then asked him to get the money from his hostel room, but only RM718 was returned. The remaining RM31 was allegedly used to repay a debt to a friend,” she told Sinar Harian on Wednesday.
Liyana said the staff member on duty that night lodged a police report, adding that money had gone missing several times since she started running the school canteen in 2023.
However, she said no action was taken previously due to a lack of evidence.
The latest incident prompted her to take firmer action as she felt such a thing should not happen at a school that places emphasis on religious education.
She also expressed disappointment with the school management, claiming that no effort had been made to settle the matter amicably.
“At the very least, they could have discussed the matter with us so we could try to settle it amicably, including by contacting the student’s parents,” she said.
Meanwhile, Jasin District Police chief Superintendent Lee Robert confirmed that a report had been received and said investigations were ongoing.
