Former Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira is being treated in intensive care in the Samaritano hospital in Rio de Janeiro, the clinic said on Thursday.
The 1994 World Cup winner is receiving mechanical breathing support but his condition is stable, the hospital said
The 83-year-old was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2023, a type of cancer that begins in the lymphatic system.
The disease was at times considered in remission, but it later reappeared.
He is considered one of the most successful coaches in Brazilian football history, leading the national team to its fourth World Cup title in the United States in 1994.
Parreira, who was born in Rio, was national coach of Kuwait (1982), the United Arab Emirates (1990), Brazil (1994/2006), Saudi Arabia (1998) and South Africa (2010).
He also won the Copa América in 2004 and the Confederations Cup in 2005 as coach of the Seleção. He was already part of the national team's staff as a fitness coach when they won the World Cup in 1970.
