Mitchell Schwartz did not need much subtlety to question the timing of Rashee Rice’s latest setback.
The former Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle reacted after Rice’s legal situation collided with a fresh knee procedure, creating an awkward recovery window for one of Patrick Mahomes’ key receivers.
Rice is already dealing with enough uncertainty after surgery, and spending the next month away from the team facility only makes the situation harder for Kansas City to manage.

Mitchell Schwartz mocks Rashee Rice’s rehab timing
Former Chiefs tackle Mitchell Schwartz reacted sarcastically after Rashee Rice was ordered to serve 30 days in jail shortly after undergoing knee surgery.
Schwartz wrote, “The absolute best rehab plan a week after surgery is being in jail for 30 days. That’s what they always say.”
The joke was sharp because the timing is genuinely difficult. Rice reportedly had clean-up surgery on his right knee to remove loose debris that was causing inflammation, with the procedure expected to keep him sidelined for around two months.
The surgery came one week before Rice was ordered to serve 30 days in jail after violating the terms of his probation. That creates a messy recovery setup at a stage when players usually need consistent treatment, controlled movement and close medical monitoring.
For the Chiefs, the issue is not simply public embarrassment. Rice will miss organized team activities and mandatory minicamp while Kansas City tries to prepare its offense for another season.
Rashee Rice setback complicates Kansas City Chiefs’ plans
Kansas City can absorb some offseason disruption, but Rice’s situation touches both health and trust at the same time.
Rice’s legal trouble stems from the 2024 Dallas crash case, where he later pleaded guilty to felony charges connected to a high-speed multi-car wreck. His probation violation reportedly came after a positive marijuana test.
Reports have indicated the latest procedure showed no new structural damage in his knee, which is the encouraging part, but a two-month recovery still puts pressure on his training camp timeline.
Schwartz’s post landed because it said out loud what many Chiefs fans were already thinking. Jail is obviously not an ideal place to begin the first full month after knee surgery.
Rice remains a major weapon when available, and Kansas City needs his route running, yards-after-catch ability and chemistry with Mahomes. His talent is not in question. The concern is availability.
