Kota Kinabalu: Former Chief Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak (pic) has called on a Sepang Umno leader to issue an open apology over sexually suggestive jokes involving Catholic priests and nuns made during the recent Umno general assembly.
Salleh, also Sabah Umno treasurer, echoed concerns raised by Tuaran Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau about the remarks, which were seen as insensitive to the nation's Christian community.
In a Facebook post on Monday, Salleh said the party leader should offer a sincere public apology, stressing that mutual respect, responsibility, and social boundaries must not be breached regardless of politics.
He noted that Muslims, Christians, and people of other faiths in Sabah have coexisted with mutual respect for generations, underscoring the need to preserve interfaith harmony and call out wrongdoing without bias.
Earlier, Madius had criticised the delegate via social media for referencing Catholic clergy alongside a mention of Psalm 129, asserting that religious figures must not be made the subject of sexual innuendo on national political platforms.
