Former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin is poised to confront charges in the Sessions Court on Monday over allegations of failing to comply with a notice to declare his assets. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) recorded his statement, and in a released statement, Daim revealed that he anticipates being charged under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act 2009, specifically related to the disclosure of assets.
Expressing his readiness for the legal proceedings, Daim stated, "So be it. I look forward to my day in court." This sentiment was reiterated by his lawyer, Rajesh Nagarajan, confirming the impending charges. However, the legal process faced a delay earlier when the MACC had obtained permission to charge Daim but had to postpone it due to his health issues, leading to his admission to a private hospital.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki disclosed that permission from the Attorney-General Chambers was secured last week, but the proceedings were deferred due to Daim's hospitalization. Notably, there was no clarification provided regarding the reason for Daim's hospital stay.
Daim, who served as Finance Minister from 1984 to 1991, is currently under investigation based on information derived from the Pandora Papers. These documents unveiled details related to the wealth of influential individuals worldwide who hid their assets through offshore services or companies situated outside their home countries.
The legal developments surrounding Daim come in the wake of charges against his wife, Toh Puan Na’imah Abdul Khalid. She was charged in the Sessions Court on January 23 for failing to comply with a notice to declare her assets, which include properties in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
Earlier, Na’imah and her two sons were summoned to the MACC headquarters to provide statements in connection with the commission's investigation against Daim, who is also known for his business ventures. The roots of this investigation trace back to February of the previous year when the Pandora Papers revelations came to light.
As Daim prepares to make his appearance in court, the legal proceedings are expected to unravel the intricacies of the allegations surrounding non-compliance with asset declaration and their correlation with the Pandora Papers revelations, shedding light on a complex legal saga.
