Court orders former candidate to undergo psychiatric treatment
KUALA LUMPUR: A former independent candidate in the 15th General Election (GE15) has been detained over the alleged assault of a 79-year-old woman in OUG here last Friday.
The woman, a former Selangor hockey player, reportedly suffered injuries to her head, left hand and back after allegedly being pushed into a drain, The Vibes reports.
Brickfields district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hoo Chang Hook said the incident occurred at about 10.30am outside a row of shops.
He said preliminary investigations found that the victim had visited a shop before allegedly being followed by the suspect.
“After the victim left the premises at about 10.30am, the suspect, who was outside the shop, allegedly pushed her, causing her to fall into a drain.
“The victim sustained injuries to the back of her head, left hand and back before being taken to University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) for treatment,” he said.
Hoo said the victim’s friend lodged a police report at 12.37pm on the same day.
Following the report, a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Brickfields district police headquarters detained the suspect.
He said the suspect denied pushing the victim during initial questioning but was unable to provide a reasonable explanation for her alleged actions.
“The suspect also did not know the victim personally,” he said.
Hoo said the suspect was remanded for one day before the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court ordered her to undergo psychiatric treatment.
Meanwhile, he said the victim was admitted to the emergency ward for four days before being discharged on Sept 21.
“Police are awaiting the full medical report from UMMC, including a statement from the attending doctor, before submitting the investigation papers to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further instructions,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code.
