Former Germany forward Kevin Volland has ended his professional career and won't stay at 1860 Munich after their forced drop into the fourth division.
Volland made his first team debut at 1860 in 2010 before returning last year with the aim of helping them return into the second division. But 1860 missed promotion and dropped from the third to the fourth tier because they could not meet licensing requirements.
Volland also played for Hoffenheim, Bayer Leverkusen, Monaco and Union Berlin and won 15 Germany caps, scoring one goal.
"At some stage you have to make a decision that isn#t easy personally. One day the career end arrives like it is the case with me," Volland said in a video on the 1860 website.
"When I look back on the last 16 years of my career, football has given me so many wonderful, unforgettable moments. I’ll be forever grateful for that. Now a new chapter in my life is beginning, and in a way, it’s a new challenge too."
Volland said he would continue playing in the amateur leagues, with the Allgäuer Zeitung saying he would play for lower league Thalhofen, his first club when he was a little boy.
