The caption worked because Manning’s ties to the venue are obvious. He spent all 16 seasons of his NFL career with the Giants, won two Super Bowls and became one of the franchise’s defining players.
Seeing him back at MetLife for a World Cup match gave the scene a different feel. Manning was no longer reading an NFL defense from the field, he was part of the crowd watching another version of football take over his old home.

Manning’s appearance did not come out of nowhere. He had already been involved in promoting the 2026 World Cup, including work around the tournament draw, and had spoken about wanting to bring his family to the France vs Senegal match.
