KOTA KINABALU (May 11): Former Luyang assemblyman Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe has pledged to continue championing Sabah’s rights and be a strong voice for the state, following his appointment as a senator in the Dewan Negara.

The Sabah chairman of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) stressed that his mission of and commitment to serving the people remained unchanged despite taking on a new role at the federal level.

“With the recommendation of the party and the nation, and with the consent of His Majesty Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, I am honoured to be appointed as a senator of Malaysia.

“This appointment is a reminder for me to work even harder for the home that we all love,” he said in a Facebook post, uploaded in connection with the swearing-in ceremony on Monday.

Phoong said that throughout his political journey, he had always regarded public service as a responsibility that he deeply valued.

“No matter the position I hold or the role I play, I have always loved this responsibility of serving the people,” he added.

Phoong also acknowledged the feedback, criticisms and expectations expressed by the public over the past several months, giving assurance that he would carry the people’s aspirations into Parliament.

“As I step into Parliament, I will stand fearless. The people’s voice must always rise above political and party interests.

“I will continue to speak up and fight courageously for Sabah, be steadfast on Sabah’s rights, and remain committed to building a Malaysian federation that is truly fair and just for Sabah.

“This appointment would further strengthen my determination in serving the people with greater dedication, and becoming a firm voice for Sabah in the Senate.

“Now, let me work harder than ever, serve with even greater dedication.”

Meanwhile in a statement, DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Sabah chief Chan Loong Wei expressed confidence in Phoong to serve well as a senator.

Chan said the appointment came following the completion of former senator Noorita Sual’s term.

“It reflects the party’s continued commitment to ensuring Sabah’s voice and interests remain represented at the federal level.

“The appointment should be viewed as a responsibility to continue advocating for Sabah’s development needs, rights and long-term progress.

“Despite past electoral setbacks, DAP has never abandoned Sabah; instead, the party has chosen to continue rebuilding from the ground, reconnecting with the people, and regaining public trust through consistent work and service.”

Chan added that with Phoong’s appointment to the Dewan Negara, Sabah DAP would continue to have a platform at the federal level to raise Sabah-related concerns and push for greater attention towards Sabah’s development priorities.

“I also hope that the federal government would place greater emphasis on addressing Sabah’s long-standing development gaps, particularly in infrastructure, healthcare, education, logistics costs and youth development opportunities.”
