Bersama welcomes former Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung
PETALING JAYA: Former Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung has applied to join Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama), with the party welcoming him as one of its prospective leaders.
Bersama said Lee submitted his membership application today and that it would be processed in accordance with the party’s membership procedures.

In a statement, the party said Lee would serve among its interim leaders and share responsibility for leading its campaign for the Melaka state election, with a focus on strengthening the party’s machinery in Chinese-majority areas.
He will serve alongside former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, former vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, former Subang MP Wong Chen and party president Syukri Razab until Bersama holds its leadership election, which is expected to take place next year.
Lee’s move comes three days after he resigned as the Petaling Jaya MP following PKR’s decision to suspend his membership for three years.
Lee announced his resignation last Friday (Oct 2), saying it took effect immediately and without conditions.
He subsequently said he would formally leave PKR today, ending an 18-year association with the party.
He had submitted his resignation letter to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul after PKR suspended him on Sept 30.
Lee was elected Petaling Jaya MP in the 2022 general election after serving two terms as the Semambu assemblyman in Pahang. He previously served as PKR treasurer-general and national communications director.
His relationship with PKR had become increasingly strained after he attended Bersama events and raised concerns over several government policies, including the Urban Renewal Act, foreign worker management and parliamentary allocations.
Bersama said Lee’s entry would strengthen its leadership as the party continued to expand, with his experience expected to contribute to its preparations for the Melaka polls.
Earlier, Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Seri Dr Ramli Mohd Nor told the House today that Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul had received Lee’s resignation letter on Oct 2.
He said the Speaker had informed the Election Commission of the vacancy in the Petaling Jaya parliamentary seat in accordance with Article 54(1) of the Federal Constitution.
