BATU PAHAT - Former Rengit assemblyman Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi, has openly expressed support for Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for the Rengit state seat Mohamad Yazid Bakri, in the Johor state election.
In a campaign poster uploaded on his Facebook page, the former Umno supreme council member said his decision was based on the personal character of the candidate rather than political party affiliation.
“Right now, I am not affiliated with any party. I choose candidates based on their personal character. Therefore, I choose Yazid because…,” he said.
He then listed five reasons for supporting Yazid, including that the candidate is a native of Rengit, lives in the area, owns a house there and serves as the chairman of a surau in Rengit.
The poster also carried the slogan "Orang Rengit Jaga Rengit" along with the candidate’s number and the PH logo, urging voters to support Yazid.
On June 25, the former state assembly speaker announced his immediate resignation from Umno.
The party’s secretary-general, Datuk Seri Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki later claimed that Puad had previously threatened to leave the party and publicly criticised him if his son was not nominated for the Rengit seat.
Puad won the Rengit state seat in the 2022 Johor state election with a majority of 1,920 votes.
He secured a total of 7,903 votes, defeating three other candidates from Perikatan Nasional, PKR and Pejuang.
