Former Singapore president now thinks twice about patting children after Roxy Square incident

FORMER Singapore president Halimah Yacob said that she now has to "constantly restrain" herself from patting children on the head, following an incident at Roxy Square where a 73-year-old man was allegedly pushed to the ground after patting a young girl.

Her remarks came amid wider discussion about interactions between adults, children and strangers.

Halimah was speaking about how society has become more fragmented and the need for intergenerational bonding in community spaces, according to a video posted by CNA.

"I used to do that all the time. Now, I have to constantly restrain myself, and I'm very scared," she said.

"I mean, it's a sign of endearment, like you like young children, especially when you are very old."

Halimah called for meaningful activities that bring older and younger Singaporeans together and strengthen social bonds.

She highlighted the importance of maintaining connections between generations and suggested that regular interaction could help preserve understanding and social cohesion.
