From giving breathtaking K-pop performances to being a budding entrepreneur, former SISTAR member SOYOU has been there, done that.

After a long wait of two years, K-pop soloist SOYOU, aka Kang Ji-yun, made her comeback with her 2025 single “PDA”. Her last album, Re:Born, was released in 2017. Her new song is a bold yet playful dance track that taps into the carefree sparkle of the Y2K aesthetic while showcasing a more refined, self-assured side of her artistry.

Known for her smooth, powerful vocals and versatility, SOYOU is reminding fans why she remains one of K-pop’s most beloved voices, but this comeback is about more than just music. Offstage, she has also taken on a brand-new role as an entrepreneur with her brand, So & You. She has ventured into the beverage industry with a vision that reflects her own taste and personality.

In this exclusive chat with Lifestyle Asia, SOYOU gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the production of “PDA”, shares her journey as a first-time businesswoman, and discusses how she continues to stay in touch with her fellow SISTAR alums, Hyolyn, Bora and Dasom.

SISTAR alum SOYOU on dropping her latest single “PDA”

It’s your first comeback in about two years. How does it feel to return with “PDA”?

SOYOU: I’m just so excited and happy to meet fans again with a dance track after two years.

This is your first project with indie label Magic Strawberry Sound. What inspired your music or artistic vision?

SOYOU: The biggest inspiration came from wondering what new side of myself I could show here. Also, I’ve always envied couples showing affection in public; it’s something I can’t do easily, so I wanted to express that side through music.

The song’s themes are confidence and desire. Did it come from personal experience or imagination?

SOYOU: It did not come from one specific experience. It was more about freely moving between my own experiences and imagination to capture the idea of expressing love openly, without hiding.

The Y2K-inspired music video combines early 2000s aesthetics with a modern touch. What was your vision behind it?

SOYOU: I focused on highlighting a natural yet confident version of myself, with bright and bold energy that feels authentic to who I am now.

The lyric “BRB for our PDA” is catchy. How did it come about?

SOYOU: The playful, casual nuance of “BRB” fits perfectly with the theme of “PDA”. I wanted to express affection in a confident and cute way, so I worked it into the lyrics.

SOYOU on her bond with SISTAR bandmates and the launch of So & You

Fans are always curious about your bond with the other SISTAR members. How do you maintain that connection?

SOYOU: It’s always the same — we meet whenever our schedules align, enjoy good food, and chat away.

You recently started your own brand, So & You. How does it feel to take on this new challenge as an entrepreneur?

SOYOU: It wasn’t a grand plan — I’ve always loved drinks, but couldn’t find one I could enjoy while dieting. That’s how it started. It’s my first time trying something like this, and it’s still very difficult with so much to learn.

SOYOU on her future projects and message for fans

Having just reunited with fans on stage, can you share any hints about upcoming performances or projects?

SOYOU: For now, I’m focusing on wrapping up the K-OST concerts. I plan to do many more live shows and events, and my next project will be something new yet familiar.

Lastly, do you have a message for your Malaysian fans?

SOYOU: I was supposed to see you this time, but sadly, the chance fell through. I really hope we can meet soon, there will be more opportunities!
