Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Environmental Protection Association (Sepa) will hold a public forum on July 18 to discuss who should pay for Sabah’s transition to renewable energy, bringing together speakers from government, industry and academia.
“Energy transition is not simply a technical issue. It is also an economic and social issue that affects every household and business. Through this forum, we hope to encourage informed public discussion on how Sabah can build a cleaner, more secure and affordable energy future,” Sepa said.
The forum, titled “Powering Sabah’s Future; Who Will Pay for Sabah’s Energy Transition?”, will be held at Kinabalu Daya Hotel here from 9am to 12 noon and is free to attend.
Sabah relies heavily on natural gas and diesel for electricity, while transport and much of its economy remain dependent on fossil fuels. The state has set a target of 35 per cent renewable energy in its electricity mix by 2030.
The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) is also expected to launch the Sabah Energy Efficiency Action Plan and the Solar Rakyat Sabah Programme later this month to encourage households to adopt solar power.
Speakers include ECoS Director of Strategic Planning Terrence Kouju, consulting engineer Eng Weng Hong and Universiti Malaysia Sabah engineering fellow Dr Tom Ngui. Sepa president Alexander Yee will moderate the discussion.
Sepa said the forum is meant for policymakers, industry professionals and ordinary consumers alike. Members of the public can register through SEPA’s Facebook page.
