In a dramatic sequence of events, two separate encounters took place at the same spot on Wednesday when a police team investigating a crossfire incident came under fresh attack from armed associates of a gangster.

According to the police, a team from the Valtoha police station was already engaged in an encounter with two alleged gangster associates, identified as Akashdeep and Sunny, when another pair of armed men arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire on the police personnel.

Police officials said the first encounter occurred during an operation against gangster associates in the area. During the exchange of fire, Akashdeep and Sunny sustained bullet injuries to their legs. They were rushed to a hospital.

While the police team was still at the crime scene and carrying out further action, two more men allegedly sent by the gangster mastermind reached the spot and attacked the police team.

The police retaliated and chased the motorcycle-borne assailants. A second exchange of fire took place shortly afterward, in which both attackers, identified as Sunny and Sukhwinder, suffered multiple bullet injuries before being overpowered by the police.

They were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment under police security. No police personnel were reported injured in the operation.

SSP Tarn Taran, Surinder Lamba, said separate cases under relevant sections of the BNS and Arms Act are being registered and investigations are underway to ascertain the role of the accused in criminal activities and their links with the gangster network.
