French outlets remain unimpressed with Ethan Nwaneri’s form, even though he came off the bench to set up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s winner.
The 18-year-old, currently on loan from Arsenal, played a key role in Marseille’s dramatic late win over Lyon. He assisted Aubameyang in stoppage time, capping off a thrilling finish in Southern France.
Nwaneri has not had an easy transition to Ligue 1. Since Roberto De Zerbi’s departure, he has struggled to hold onto his place in the starting line-up.
He was expected to gain valuable experience and regular playing time with Marseille, but for now, the midfielder finds himself starting games from the bench.
French media unimpressed with Ethan Nwaneri’s recent Marseille appearance

Le Phoceen, a Marseille-based publication, was not impressed by Nwaneri’s showing against Lyon.
The young midfielder came off the bench and played 36 minutes at the Stade Velodrome, making an impact late on by setting up the winner.
Lyon had taken an early lead just three minutes in, but Igor Paixao brought Marseille level just before the hour mark.
Aubameyang secured a crucial three points for the hosts with a stoppage-time brace, dramatically overturning Lyon’s lead, which had been restored in the 76th minute.
Despite Nwaneri’s contribution, Le Phoceen suggested his 5.5/10 rating would have been even lower if not for that assist.
The French outlet commented on his performance: “A difficult half-hour, marked by technical errors and a lack of impact on the game.
“But the big moments changed everything: his perfect cross in stoppage time secured the victory for OM. A decisive pass that weighed heavily, very heavily, on the outcome of the match.
“Without this contribution, his rating would have been much harsher. With it, he salvaged his performance and became decisive.”
Nwaneri is feeling the pressure that comes with playing for a major club early in his career. The experience should prove valuable as he continues to develop.
The 18-year-old remains highly regarded at Arsenal and there are hopes he will soon get more regular opportunities in France.
He has already made a good impression during training sessions, now he just needs to carry that form into matches more consistently.
