French Open champion Mirra Andreeva was knocked out in the round of 16 at the WTA tournament in Bad Homburg on Wednesday.

In her first appearance since her triumph at Roland Garros, the Russian was defeated 6-3, 6-4 by her compatriot Ekaterina Alexandrova.

The 19-year-old world number five failed to make the most of the grass-court event, a dress rehearsal for Wimbledon.

The next Grand Slam starts in London next week.

Andreeva was seeded second at the tournament in central Germany, near Frankfurt.

The only German entrant, Eva Lys, lost in the first round on Tuesday to US player Emma Navarro who has now put out number one seed Iga Świątek.

A 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 win left the Pole, who has six major singles titles including last year's Wimbledon, licking her wounds before travelling to the illustrious London event.

Naomi Osaka and Elena Svitolina were among the favourites who progressed into the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

The high-calibre WTA 500 tournament in Bad Homburg offers prize money totalling more than $1 million.
