Teenager Moïse Kouamé won a first round battle of the generations 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, 6-1 against Marin Cilic on Tuesday and made Frenbch Open history by doing so.

Kouamé is also the first player born in 2008 or later to play and to win a grand slam men's match. He is coached by former French great Richard Gasquet and ranked 318th got into the main draw via a wildcard.

Another former US Open champion bowed out as seven seeded Daniil Medvedev's Roland Garros agony continued with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 defeat against Australia's Adam Walton.

Medvedev squandered two break points leading 3-1 in the fifth set of a rollercoaster match and suffered his second straight and seventh overall first-round exit in Paris with a double fault and an unforced error.

Women's world number one Aryna Sabalenka meanwhile had a winning start, 6-4, 6-2 over Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain.
