In Auvergne, the Super-Besse ski resort is experimenting with early-season snowmaking, managing to cover parts of its slopes with artificial snow even as temperatures reach 10°C.

Resort managers say the goal is to prepare pistes before the Christmas holidays, ensuring a 30-meter-wide layer for visitors.

Tourists, surprised to touch snow in autumn sunlight, questioned the cost and environmental impact.

Environmental groups warn the energy consumption is equivalent to that of 300 households over two months.

Local officials argue the operation helps protect seasonal jobs and supports the resort’s long-term transition plans.
