A part of the United States’ World Cup planning has hit an unexpected complication, and Germany may be at the centre of it.

Noahkai Banks had been viewed as part of the USMNT’s future, with early signs pointing towards a potential role in the 2026 squad.

However, developments over the past week have introduced fresh uncertainty in terms of his international allegiance.

Banks will miss the upcoming international window. He picked up a foot injury that ruled him out of Augsburg’s clash with Borussia Dortmund on March 14, but his decision is not solely tied to that.

According to ESPN, the 19-year-old defender remains undecided on his international future, with Germany maintaining contact and monitoring his progress, opening the door to a potential switch.

That absence comes at a crucial moment, especially after Banks had previously been called up by Mauricio Pochettino in September 2025, where he was seen as a future World Cup option despite not earning game time on that occasion.

There had been growing expectation the Augsburg defender could push for a place in the final squad. Yet the situation has shifted.

With him now out of the March squad and no firm commitment made, his chances of featuring at the World Cup for the United States appear to have taken a significant hit.

Strong Bundesliga season highlights rising profile

Despite the uncertainty, his club form continues to underline why both nations are interested.

He has featured in 21 Bundesliga matches this season, starting 19 of them, while contributing one goal and one assist.

Operating primarily as a right centre-back, he has become a regular presence for Augsburg, who currently sit 10th in the league standings.

That consistency at club level at such a young age has elevated his reputation quickly.
