2022 World Cup champions Argentina will begin their knockout journey when they come up against Cape Verde, who reached the round of 32 in their first World Cup. Messi is the joint leading goalscorer alongside Kylian Mbappe and will have the chance to go clear at the top of the charts, with coverage beginning on ITV at 10.15pm. In the day’s other games, Mohamed Salah’s Egypt face Australia in Dallas (BBC One 6.30pm) and Colombia take on Ghana in Kansas on ITV at 2.00am (Sat).
British Grand Prix begins

The first practice session from Formula One’s British Grand Prix gets under way, with a British hat-trick on the cards after Lewis Hamilton’s victory in Barcelona and George Russell’s first place in Austria. Lando Norris won this race in 2025 and he will be hoping his weekend gets off to a good start when coverage begins at 12pm on Sky Sports F1 and Sky Sports Main Event 1200, also on Channel 4 at 12.25pm.
Big names on the agenda at Wimbledon

Jannik Sinner has found Wimbledon challenging after hard-fought victories against Miomir Kecmanovic and Nuno Borges and he returns for his third round clash with American Jenson Brooksby as he looks to defend his crown. 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic is also in action against Arthur Rinderknech, with Aryna Sabalenka set to take on Jeļena Ostapenko. Live coverage begins on BBC Two from 11.00am and 3.00pm, also on BBC One at 2.00pm and 7.00pm.
What else is happening on Friday?

It is day one of the second Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka in Antigua on TNT Sports 2 from 2.45pm, while Women’s Vitality Blast action is on with The Blaze taking on Surrey on Sky Sports Cricket at 2.25pm before Men’s Blast action at Trent Bridge, with Nottinghamshire and Lancashire also on Sky Sports Cricket at 6.25pm.
Elsewhere, there is plenty of golf on as the second round of the BMW International Open starts at 11.30am on Sky Sports Golf. The John Deere Classic is on the same channel at 9pm while the Arnold Palmer Cup begins on Sky Sports Mix at 9am and the US Senior Open on Sky Sports+ at 4pm.
