Frigoni, Minowa named as Alas Pilipinas coaches for Asian Games

MANILA, Philippines — Italian Angiolino Frigoni got reinstated as Alas Pilipinas men's head coach while Japanese Taka Minowa was named the Alas women's chief tactician for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya 20th Asian Games.

The Asiad will run from September 19 to October 4 in Japan.

The Philippine Olympic Committee announced the development on Sunday, with the appointment of both coaches taking effect on July 1 and expiring on October 15.

Frigoni, 72, started as Alas men's coach mid-2024 for the SEA Men's V. League leg 2 where the nationals claimed a bronze medal finish.

Last year in September, Frigoni led Alas to a breakthrough win against Egypt in the FIVB Men's World Championship where the host country Philippines finished 19th out of 32 teams.

Three months later at the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand, Frigoni steered Alas to a bronze medal finish.

Meanwhile, Minowa was more involved the local professional scene at the Premier Volleyball League from 2023 to 2025.

Minowa, 34, handled sister clubs Akari Chargers and Nxled Chameleons.

The husband of former national team standout Jaja Santiago, also known by her Japanese name as Sachi Minowa, also coached Alas at the junior level.

Minowa led the Alas girls to a 10th place finish at the 2024 AVC Women's U18 Volleyball Championship in Thailand.
