Exams, literature, and achieving high grades are not the only aspects of studying. In reality, it's a voyage of self-discovery. In actuality, you won't be able to determine your learning style unless you experiment with several approaches. others learn by writing, others through listening, some through discussion, and some through repeated practice. As we mature from children to adults, our study habits gradually shift in tandem with our surroundings, responsibilities, and way of life. When we go to college or become adults, what worked for us as kids might not work for us anymore.
Learning was quite easy when we were younger, especially under the age of seven. We did what our teachers instructed. The majority of learning in preschool or play school was accomplished through instruction, practice, and enjoyable activities. As we started elementary school, we gradually began handling basic tasks like homework and revision on our own, but we were still mostly dependent on parents and teachers. Learning was still very regimented at that point, and we were continuously reminded of our responsibilities.
When we started secondary school, things started to change. Many teenagers begin to explore their identities outside of the classroom at this point. Some students participate in groups, competitions, leadership programs, public speaking, sports, or uncovering latent abilities. Students now develop life skills, self-assurance, communication, and independence in secondary school rather than just studying. Students are already exposed to a more serious academic lifestyle as they prepare for important exams like the SPM.
However, the biggest shock usually comes after SPM. Whether students choose matriculation, foundation, diploma, STPM, or overseas studies, the learning environment becomes completely different. University life is no longer about waiting for teachers to guide you step by step. Instead, students are expected to prepare themselves before attending classes. Lecturers may upload lecture notes earlier because they expect students to read and understand basic concepts before the lecture even starts. Imagine attending a lecture with 50 to 100 slides filled with heavy information in just one day. Without preparation, it can feel overwhelming and exhausting.
Additionally, students learn independence in a whole new way at university. Throughout the semester, there are numerous assignments, quizzes, presentations, quick tests, group projects, and final exams. Lecturers might not always remind pupils of every detail, unlike at school. Students must control their own study schedules, time, and emotions. Finding the best study method becomes crucial as a result. Some pupils learn better when they take notes on a regular basis. Others pick up knowledge by paying close attention to lectures. While some students like to teach their friends and participate in group discussions, others record themselves speaking. Since every brain absorbs knowledge differently, there is no "perfect" way to learn.
Studying is ultimately about understanding oneself, not about competing with others. Comparing yourself to other students is not as important as your preparation, consistency, and rate of learning. Particularly in areas like medical, engineering, or health sciences, where students cannot just stroll into lectures with no prior knowledge, some courses may demand more preparation. Your academic path can be greatly impacted by active learning, preparation before class, and identifying your own study style. Studying becomes more meaningful and productive when you stop pressuring yourself to learn in the same way as everyone else and begin learning in your own way.
