Stage is set for Malaysia International Dive Expo

The moment I stepped into MITEC’s glass doors, the scent of neoprene, sea salt, and human curiosity hit me all at once. As an avid diver, I came to the 19th Malaysia International Dive Expo (MIDE) expecting gear upgrades and maybe a good catch up with fellow divers. Instead, I was re-anchored with a complete ocean lifestyle, bringing together the thrill of diving, the freedom of sailing, the leisure of boating, and the excitement of watersports. Tailored for diving professionals, marine conservationists, and aquatic sports enthusiasts, this year’s edition expands its focus to embrace all corners of water-based exploration and recreation.

This year’s theme—“Explore, Connect & Conserve the Ocean’s Enigma”—wasn’t just catchy. It was a reflection of what MIDE has become. Not just a trade show, but a celebration of underwater culture, aquatic lifestyle, and most importantly, marine responsibility.

Sea of Innovation

My first stop was the Lens Beyond Ocean photography gallery. Floating between life-size underwater prints, each frame felt like a frozen breath from beneath the surface. A curious scuba diver. A reef covered by a school of barracudas under fractured light. These weren’t just photos—they were love letters to the sea.

At the exhibit halls, discounts were everywhere. Booths offered unbeatable prices on wetsuits, dive computers, fins and even one-piece masks with anti-fog tech. From mermaids to underwater filmmaking, the expo’s offerings painted a picture of an industry diving headfirst into innovation.

Tourism Terengganu Steals the Spotlight

Of all the booths, the Pavilion by Tourism Terengganu radiated quiet elegance. With hues of blue and iconic turtle mascots , it became my go-to anchor point between sessions (Plus their Pavilion was the first to welcome visitors into the hall).

That’s where I met Hilman bin Hajijan, Director General of Tourism Terengganu.

“We are not just here to promote diving,” he said while handing me a brochure. “We are here to invite the world to fall in love with the stories of our culture and waters—stories that begin at Redang, Perhentian, Lang Tengah, and Tenggol. These aren’t just islands. They are cinematic, cultural, and spiritual destinations.” This gives a hint on how Visit Malaysia 2026 will be expecting from Terengganu.

And true to his words, Terengganu made waves with the soft launch of the Sultan Mizan International Photography Awards (SMIPA). This global photography competition, formerly local, now welcomes entries from around the world. But it isn’t just about underwater snapshots—it includes wildlife, heritage, people, and short films. It positions Terengganu not only as a diving hotspot but as a creative and conservation hub.

Meetups, MoUs, and Marine Dreams

The MIDE floor wasn't just shining with fresh gear and gadgets, it was ripe with business matchmaking too. I witnessed B2B sessions where local dive operators from Sabah, Langkawi, and Terengganu sat across the table from agents from Korea, India, Philippines and Indonesia. There were laughs, handshakes, and real-time itinerary planning. You could feel the excitement of tourism activities already!

I also got a sneak peek of the RHB Ocean Harmoni Debit Card-i, a financial product made for divers (yes, really). Imagine a card that takes away currency exchange woes, 34 currencies in a card at an attractive rate.

The Ocean Isn’t Just a Playground. It’s a Purpose.

As an avid diver, my relationship with the ocean is intimate. I hold my breath and surrender. But after MIDE 2025, I left with a renewed sense of duty. Seeing adaptive diving awards given out, hearing about zero-waste reef projects, and watching children learn about marine life through recycled craft sessions. It all reminded me that the ocean needs us now more than ever.

I’ll dive deeper, and protect harder.
