FT zakat collection up 13% in 2022: minister

PUTRAJAYA – The collection of property and personal zakat by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIWP) increased by 13% last year from RM828.67 million in 2021.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the property zakat collection last year was RM923.28 million, while the remaining RM13.75 million was zakat fitrah.

“The total number of property zakat payers last year was 240,630, while personal tithe payers numbered at 1.59 million.

“The total number of zakat payers in the Federal Territories last year has increased to 1.83 million people compared with 1.566 million people in 2021.

“The increase in zakat collections and payers is due to several factors such as diversity in payment options as well as continuous and widespread promotion through various platforms,” he said here today.

Overall last year, income zakat recorded the highest collection at RM631 million (67%), followed by business tithes (RM139 million).

From January to December last year, MAIWP distributed RM855.52 million in zakat funds to 220,769 asnaf recipients through various programmes and initiatives.

This year, Na’im said, MAIWP is targeting RM1.02 billion in zakat and waqf collection and 1.91 million zakat payers. – Bernama, January 26, 2023
