G7 summit: Leaders meet AI CEOs with US 'kill switch' in mind

G7 leaders and partners are meeting with the CEOs of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral and other leading AI companies to discuss how to ensure the rapid and safe deployment of artificial intelligence.

Yet the fact that the US government can restrict access to its most advanced technologies for allies and rivals alike is likely to loom over the discussions, leaving Washington's partners with a bitter aftertaste.

The Trump administration's recent decision to block all foreign nationals from accessing Anthropic's most powerful AI models — and the company's swift compliance with the export restrictions — is likely to leave a lasting mark, giving the EU's tech sovereignty agenda another boost.

The European Commission has been urging the US government not to discriminate against "trusted partners," an argument other G7 countries are likely to echo. The question is whether President Trump will be receptive.
