Gary Davies reflects on ‘not easy’ start to Radio 2 breakfast show after Scott Mills sacking

Gary Davies has concluded his tenure hosting the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show, admitting the initial period "wasn’t easy" as he bid farewell to listeners.

The broadcaster had been covering the morning slot since Scott Mills was dismissed by the corporation in March.

Sara Cox is now poised to permanently take over the breakfast show from Monday, having previously fronted the teatime programme, from 4pm to 7pm, on the station since 2018.

In his final broadcast, Davies expressed his gratitude, stating: "I’m not one for big speeches but thank you to the whole breakfast team, you are just the best ever. It wasn’t easy at the beginning but we got there. I loved every single second being with you in the mornings here on Radio 2. Thank you, thank you. We’ll say goodbye for now."

In March 2026, Mills’ contract with the corporation was terminated following allegations about his personal conduct, bringing his three-decade career with the BBC to a sudden end.

Cox’s appointment as the new host was revealed in April. The BBC has indicated her show will feature a new format, incorporating popular elements from her previous teatime programme.

In a statement shared after accepting the role as Mills’ replacement, Cox told her fans: “There are not enough adjectives to really sum up how I’m feeling about being trusted with such an iconic show but let’s start with ecstatic, honoured and incredibly chuffed.

“It’s been a dream to host the Breakfast Show since I joined Radio 2 and it feels like a bit of a full circle for me. I’ve had the most glorious seven years of my career on Teatime so thank you to my brilliant Teatime listeners who hopefully will join me at Breakfast for excellent music and all my usual nonsense plus some superstar guests.”

She added: “I honestly can’t wait to wake the nation up with the biggest most fun breakfast show ever.”

Hollywood superstar Tom Hanks is confirmed as her first guest. The new BBC Radio 2 breakfast show is set to launch on July 6 at 6::green-background[30] am.
