Gatchalian sees BARMM moving toward lasting peace, economic development

MANILA, Philippines — Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian on Monday expressed optimism that the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is moving closer to lasting peace and economic development following the election of Abdulraof Macacua as the region’s new chief minister.

In a statement, Gatchalian congratulated Macacua on his election, saying he expected the new leadership to prioritize good governance, economic progress and the welfare of residents across the region.

“We congratulate our fellow Filipinos in BARMM and Abdulraof Macacua on his election as chief minister. We believe the new leadership will advance good governance and, with the support of stakeholders, promote economic development and the welfare of everyone in the region,” he said.

The Senate President made the statement after members of the Bangsamoro Parliament convened for their inaugural session, during which Macacua was elected chief minister.

Gatchalian said political blocs, civil society organizations and local government units should unite behind the newly elected administration to help ensure political stability and inclusive development.

“Everyone has long hoped for lasting peace and prosperity in BARMM and throughout Mindanao. We are confident that we can achieve our dream of building more prosperous communities for our Muslim brothers and sisters and the entire region,” he said.
