GOMBAK - Against the backdrop of clangorous boos and cheers, Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali certainly had one heck of a reception over his bid to defend his incumbent Gombak parliamentary seat for the 15th General Election (GE15) today.
Expectedly his detractors particularly supporters from Pakatan Harapan (PH), booed him as "traitor" in reference to his defection from PKR in February 2020, which led to the collapse of the PH government.
Azmin, who is contesting under Perikatan Nasional's (PN) ticket, will go up against a five-cornered fights between, PH, Barisan Nasional (BN), Gerakan Tanah Air and an independent candidate in the coming November 19 national poll.
PH has fielded Amirudin Shari (Selangor MB), whereas BN nominated Megat Zulkarnain Omardin while Gerakan Tanah Air opted for Aziz Jamaludin Mohd Tahir. An independent candidate by the name of Zulkifli Ahmad will contest in Gombak.
After his nomination was announced, Azmin told the press that being the incumbent Gombak MP, he has competitive advantage compared to the rest of the candidates
“If you are the incumbent, certainly you have a certain degree of advantage but now the voters are very mature.
“They want to see the candidates or the incumbent that have served the constituency and the people in that area,” he told reporters after the nomination process at SMK Sungai Pusu here, today.
