Genting to host 15th World Lion Dance Championship featuring top global teams

THE world’s best lion dance teams are set to converge at Resorts World Genting this July for the 15th edition of the Genting World Lion Dance Championship, promising three days of acrobatic spectacle, cultural celebration, and fierce competition.

Scheduled from July 25 to 27 at the Arena of Stars, the championship will see 40 elite teams from countries including China, Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Canada, Hong Kong, and Malaysia compete for the coveted world champion title.

The event is jointly organised by Resorts World Genting in collaboration with the Selangor and Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Dragon and Lion Dance Federation, which is serving as technical consultant.

Federation chairman Leong Lik Tong announced the competition’s top prizes during a press conference, noting that the grand champion will receive a cash prize of US$18,000 and have their name engraved on the event’s prestigious perpetual trophy.

“The runner-up will receive US$10,000, while the third-place winner will take home US$6,000. Both will also receive trophies and medals,” he said.

This year’s championship will debut a new honour: the Best Difficulty Award. The team with the most technically complex and innovative routine will receive US$2,000 and a special trophy.

“This is our way of recognising exceptional creativity and pushing the boundaries of the sport,” Leong said.

Spencer Lee, Executive Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Public Relations at Resorts World Genting, described the championship as more than just a contest.

“In conjunction with Genting’s 60th anniversary, we are proud to elevate the art of lion dance to greater heights and inspire the next generation,” Lee said. “This is a global celebration of heritage, unity and talent.”

He also expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Tourism Malaysia for their support in organising the event.

Adding to the excitement, Miss Universe Malaysia 2024 and Top 30 Miss Universe finalist Sandra Lim announced via video that she will make a special appearance and perform during the championship’s closing ceremony.

Audiences can expect breathtaking acrobatics, vibrant costumes, and adrenaline-filled performances from the world’s finest lion dance exponents in a high-stakes cultural showcase.

Tickets for the three-day event are now available at rwgenting.com and the Resorts World Genting mobile app, priced at RM298 for reserved seating (PS1) and RM198 for free seating (PS2). – April 18, 2025
