Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, the former royal equerry who serves as Prince George's godfather, has declared his intention to take on a more hands-on role as the young prince approaches a significant milestone.

With the 12-year-old set to begin his studies at Eton College this September, Mr Lowther-Pinkerton said he plans to step up his godparenting duties.

"I'm going to be a better godfather," he said, acknowledging that his approach improves as his godchildren mature. "But I'm a better godfather when it comes time to have a bit of fun."

The former SAS soldier, who has transitioned from royal staff member to trusted family friend, expressed enthusiasm about the adventures ahead.

He described being "hauled out of retirement to be the herder of cats" during the King's Coronation in 2023, when he was tasked with supervising his godson alongside the other pages.

The group included Queen Camilla's grandsons Gus and Louis Lopes, as well as Freddy Parker Bowles.

The week-long preparations proved enjoyable, with the group finding time to visit the Imperial War Museum between their official duties.

Mr Lowther-Pinkerton told the Times: "They were charming boys, all of them, really charming.

"So well behaved, totally different from what I was like, you know.

"I've been sort of a scallywag."

When asked about the prospect of reconciliation between Princes William and Harry, Mr Lowther-Pinkerton chose his words carefully while remaining hopeful.

"Do you know what? I think I'd better steer clear of that Harry issue," he told the newspaper.

"What I would say is that I was and am very fond of him. He has huge redeeming features and I'm a perennial optimist."

The Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk, who served as an aide to both brothers, spoke warmly of his relationship with the princes.

"I always saw him as the Lion King," he said of William, adding simply: "I loved them both."
