BERLIN - The German government and US chipmaker Nvidia have agreed to enter into a strategic partnership for the development of artificial intelligence, the German government’s press office announced, Sputnik/RIA Novosti reported.

"The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) and the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) have signed a joint declaration of intent with Nvidia," the German government said. "The parties have agreed to launch an initiative to develop advanced artificial intelligence models for the field of 'physical AI'."

According to the statement, the AI partnership initiative leverages Germany’s industrial base and manufacturing potential. It has already been integrated into Germany’s AI development roadmap and the Industry 4.0 platform. The initiative aims to systematically implement industrial AI and establish a modern industrial AI ecosystem in Europe, drawing on the capabilities of leading German companies and research organisations.

The Industry 4.0 platform, a core component of the partnership, serves as a network bringing together representatives from government, industry, academia, and trade associations. The platform is currently undergoing a full strategic shift towards industrial AI and will become the primary hub for matters in this field, the government noted.

As part of the partnership, the parties intend to focus on the joint development of specialised open models for industrial AI, building upon existing open models such as Nvidia Nemotron and Nvidia Cosmos. According to the German government, Nvidia plans to expand its existing collaborations with German partners within this domain.

In addition to research institutions and industrial enterprises, the parties intend to involve German small and medium-sized businesses in this collaboration. - BERNAMA
