Germany's Frederik Ruppert became the first European athletes to run the 3,000 metres steeplechase under eight minutes on Sunday in Morocco.
Ruppert clocked 7 minutes 57.80 in a second-place finish at the Diamond League meet in Rabat behind Moroccan twice world and Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali who came first in 7:57.25.
Ruppert bettered the continental record of 8:00.09 from Frenchman Mahiedine Mekhissi by 2.29 seconds.
"It is unbelievable to be the first European to break the eight minute barrier," said Ruppert, whose previous personal best was 8:01.49.
"It is a great feeling when all this hard work finally pays off."
