Gilas Pilipinas braces for upgraded Australia squad in FIBA World Cup qualifiers 

MANILA, Philippines — Gilas Pilipinas will be facing an even more formidable Australia men’s basketball squad when the Philippines travels to Perth for the third and final widow of the FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers on July 6 at RAC Arena.

That’s because Bryce Cotton, easily the most decorated player in Australia’s National Basketball League is set to make his highly-anticipated debut for the Boomers this July 3 against Guam, followed by Gilas three days later in a lair of home games.

The 33-year-old former Providence standout is a three-time NBL champion and six-time NBL Most Valuable Player.

His immense talent buffs up an already formidable Boomers side, ranked sixth by FIBA.

Cotton got his naturalized citizenship late in 2025, and his inclusion in Australia’s men’s squad was made official a few days ago by Basketball Australia.

“Representing the Australian men’s national basketball team for the first time is something I don’t take lightly,” the six-foot Cotton said in a statement posted at NBL’s official website.

“Coming from where I come from, this opportunity means a lot to me and my family. Australia has embraced me from day one, and I’m grateful for the chance to wear the green and gold alongside a great group of guys,” he added.

“I’m excited, motivated, and ready to give everything I have for the country.”  Cotton is coming off an impressive 2025-26 season with the Adelaide 36ers where he averaged 25.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 7.6 assists.

Australia handed Gilas a sound 93-66 beating at the close of the second window last March 1 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
