After a period of much discussion within fashion circles as to the identity of Matthew M. William’s replacement at the storied French couture house Givenchy, all has finally been revealed. Sarah Burton, formerly of Alexander McQueen, is soon to take the reins.
“It is a great honour to be joining the beautiful house of Givenchy. It is a jewel. I am so excited to write the next chapter in the story of this iconic house and to bring my own vision, sensibility, and beliefs to Givenchy,” the British designer said in a statement.
Givenchy appoints Sarah Burton as its new creative director
Before her appointment, Burton spent her entire illustrious career, from 1997 to 2023, at Alexander McQueen, where she became the brand’s Creative Director in 2010. She parted ways with the British luxury fashion house in 2023 after presenting her final collection in October of that year. It was an emotional send-off for the celebrated designer, with the show marking the end of an era.
Her final collection as Creative Director paid tribute to the late great Lee Alexander McQueen and in a statement, she thanked him, saying, “He taught me so much, and I am eternally grateful to him.” Naomi Campbell closed the Spring 2024 show in a sculpted silver corset, featuring all-over glass bugle bead embroidery, paired with a looped bugle bead skirt.
“Sarah Burton is an exceptional creative talent whose work I have passionately followed for many years. I am very glad she is joining Givenchy today.
Her unique vision and approach to fashion will be invaluable to this iconic Maison, known for its audacity and haute couture. I am convinced that her creative leadership will contribute to the future success and international standing of the Maison,” Sidney Toledano, Chairman of the Givenchy board, shared in a statement, according to HypeBeast.
Burton, who succeeds Matthew M. Williams at Givenchy, will present her first collection for the Maison at Paris Fashion Week in March 2025.
