Malaysia’s political arena has been shaken by a startling claim from Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who told Parliament that authorities are investigating an alleged conspiracy involving powerful individuals attempting to destabilise the government through an international public relations campaign.
Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar revealed that a suspect linked to a major corruption probe by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had allegedly hired an international PR firm to orchestrate a coordinated narrative aimed at undermining national institutions and the current administration.
According to the prime minister, documents obtained by investigators suggest that the strategy began in August 2024 and was intended to run until the next general election, which must be held by early 2028. The plan allegedly involved outreach to foreign media outlets, financial institutions, and Malaysian lawmakers in an attempt to shape international opinion against the government’s efforts, particularly the MACC’s enforcement actions.
Neither the suspect nor the PR firm involved has been publicly identified. However, Anwar noted that the documents referenced attempts to influence global media coverage.
The allegations come amid heightened scrutiny surrounding MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki after a foreign media report last month suggested he may have breached shareholding disclosure rules. Azam has denied any wrongdoing, insisting he has “nothing to hide” and that all financial declarations were made in accordance with public service regulations.
A special government committee has been tasked with examining the claims, while some lawmakers - including members of parties within the ruling coalition - have called for a royal commission of inquiry. Anwar, however, said such a move would be premature until the committee completes its investigation.
Beyond the parliamentary address, the prime minister also sounded a broader warning about wealthy elites allegedly using financial power to shape narratives internationally and domestically.
Speaking at an iftar gathering in Kulim, Anwar cautioned Malaysians against becoming tools of foreign-backed campaigns designed to manipulate public perception.
He said those with vast wealth wield significant influence and that the nation must remain vigilant to ensure the country is not exploited by fraudulent schemes or conspiracies from abroad.
He added that aggressive anti-corruption measures taken by his administration had led to the seizure of RM15.5 billion in illicit assets over the past two years - actions he suggested had angered powerful individuals with significant resources and global connections.
The controversy has also drawn in figures linked to the late former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin. Police are reportedly looking into claims involving members of Daim’s family, though no formal charges have been announced.
Daim’s widow, Naimah Khalid, has firmly denied any involvement in attempts to topple the government. Her lawyer, Nizamuddin Hamid, dismissed the allegation as “the mother of all lies,” insisting that neither Naimah nor those present at a meeting mentioned in a police report had discussed any plot against the government.
As investigations continue, the unfolding saga raises deeper questions about the intersection of politics, wealth, and media influence in Malaysia.
Whether the alleged plot proves to be a genuine attempt to destabilise the government or just another chapter in Malaysia’s turbulent political drama remains to be seen - but the battle of narratives has also exposed alleged wrongdoing by government authorities. Or is it merely a coincidence?
