A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar, and the University of Maryland, US. GNDU Vice-Chancellor Karamjeet Singh said the ‘AI for the Future’ initiative had been formally launched in partnership with the

University of Maryland, and Viksit Amritsar.

The programme was designed to equip students with advanced knowledge and practical skills in artificial intelligence (AI) while fostering international academic collaboration and innovation, the VC added.

“Universities today must prepare students not only for existing careers, but also for emerging opportunities in rapidly evolving technological fields. This partnership represents a shared commitment to excellence, innovation, and responsible technological advancement,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor added that the collaboration with the University of Maryland would open new avenues for academic exchange, research cooperation, skill development, and global exposure for students.

He added that such initiatives aligned with the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’ by promoting innovation-driven education, and empowering young minds to contribute meaningfully to society and the economy.

The programme had received more than 300 applications from across the university. Following a rigorous selection process based on criteria established by the University of Maryland, 157 students were shortlisted, and 30 students were finally selected for specialised training and certification.

Dignitaries — including Taranjit Singh, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and board member of Viksit Amritsar; Amitabh Varshney from the University of Maryland; Preet Takhar, board member of Viksit Amritsar; and Sanjay Rai, Secretary of Education for the State of Maryland — addressed the gathering at an event held on Tuesday in this regard.

Speakers highlighted the growing importance of global educational partnerships in preparing future-ready talent, and strengthening India-US academic cooperation.
