SEN. Bong Go said Filipino tennis star Alexandra “Alex” Eala’s decision to represent the Philippines in the 2026 Asian Games despite possible sanctions from the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) was commendable.
The 21-year-old Eala chose to compete in Aichi-Nagoya instead of the mandatory WTA 1000 China Open, a decision that could result in sanctions.
”I laud and fully support Alex Eala’s decision to represent the Philippines in the 2026 Asian Games,” Go said in a manifestation, saying Eala’s choice reflected her patriotism and commitment to the country.
Eala, currently ranked 18 in the world in singles, automatically qualifies for the China Open, which runs from Sept. 30 to Oct. 11 in Beijing. The Asian Games tennis competition, on the other hand, is scheduled for Sept. 27 to Oct. 3.
The Philippine Tennis Association said it has been coordinating with the WTA and seeking an exemption that would allow Eala to compete in the continental meet without penalty.
Under the WTA’s 2026 rules, players aged 18 and above who qualify for mandatory WTA 1000 tournaments must participate. Failure to do so may result in a zero ranking-point result. Separate rules restrict participation in non-WTA competitions during the same week as a WTA tournament without a waiver.
For players ranked 11 to 20, violating the non-WTA event rule may carry a $10,000 fine.
”The Asian Games is one of the biggest sporting events in the world and forms part of the Olympic movement. Our athletes compete in these Games not merely as individuals, but as representatives of their respective countries. In my opinion, an athlete should not be penalized for choosing to represent our flag and country,” said Go, chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports.
Go has issued an appeal to the WTA to consider Eala’s circumstances and grant her exemption.
