SEN. Bong Go has reiterated his call for increased government assistance to tricycle drivers, operators, delivery riders and other transport workers amid fuel price hikes because of the ongoing war in the Middle East.
Go said transport workers who rely on daily earnings are among the most vulnerable to rising oil prices. He stressed that they play a vital role in providing mobility for workers, students and other everyday commuters.Go recently visited the family of the late Ismael Sevilla, former president of the National Capital Region Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association, to offer condolences and recognize his contributions to advancing the welfare of tricycle drivers.Go recalled meeting Sevilla in 2018 at a roadside eatery in Pasay City — an encounter that eventually led to the holding of the Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association Summit in 2019. The event brought together government agencies and transport groups to tackle key issues such as regulation, livelihood opportunities, skills training, licensing and access to public services. He noted that many challenges faced by tricycle operators and drivers association members extend beyond regulatory concerns, including health care expenses, children’s education and the need for stable income sources.Go has consistently advocated for measures to cushion the effects of fuel price volatility, including relief from fuel excise taxes and targeted fuel subsidies for affected sectors. He noted that rising fuel costs also drive up fares and the prices of basic goods, further affecting ordinary Filipinos.
