SEN. Bong Go called on Filipinos to keep rallying behind tennis sensation Alex Eala and support the country’s hosting of major international tennis tournaments, highlighting how her historic achievements brought pride to the nation while raising the sport's profile nationwide.
Speaking during the recent Senate deliberations on the proposed 2027 budget of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Go commended both Eala and the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) for advancing Philippine tennis and expanding the country's footprint on the global tennis calendar.
“Congratulations, Alex Eala and the Philippine Tennis Association,” Go said. “As for Alex, what she has achieved is a massive accomplishment. Her achievement this year was no easy feat. It is historic.”
He urged the public to recognize the honor Eala continues to bring to the country and to sustain their support for her journey on the international stage.
Eala has enjoyed a stellar 2026 season that propelled her into the world’s Top 20.
The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranked her World No. 19 as of Oct. 13, after a career-high No. 18 earlier in the season.
She also made history as the first Filipino woman to capture a WTA Tour singles title after winning the Washington tournament in August.
Go said that Eala’s rise should inspire the nation to keep building opportunities for local athletes to compete against elite international talent on home soil.
He cited the successful staging of the inaugural WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in January 2026, praising the PSC for preparing the venue.
