GOF foils an attempt to smuggle 24,000 oil palm seedlings worth RM96,000 into Thailand via an illegal jetty.
KOTA BHARU: The General Operations Force (GOF) foiled an attempt to smuggle 24,000 oil palm seedlings worth about RM96,000 into Thailand near the Tebu illegal jetty in Kampung Lubok Gong, Pasir Mas, yesterday.
GOF Southeast Brigade Commander SAC Ahmad Radzi Hussain said a team from the GOF 7th Battalion intercepted a Proton Iswara Aeroback driven by a local man during Op Taring Wawasan at about 8.30 am.
The suspect failed to produce valid documents for the seedlings and was detained, he said. The vehicle was also seized, bringing the total value of the seizure to RM100,000.
Preliminary investigations found the suspect had accepted RM150 to transport the seedlings into Thailand via the illegal crossing.
The case has been handed over to the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) in Kota Bharu for investigation under the Malaysian Palm Oil Board Act 1998 and relevant licensing regulations.
