As corporate human resource (HR) management and development practitioner, I realized high-performing teams don't happen by accident. Behind every team that consistently delivers is someone who understands how people work together and knows how to bring out the best in them. Evidently most of the readers to my story “Collaboration has long been a part of leadership - We can't compete externally if we can't first collaborate internally” published by newswav.com on 25 September, 2026. One regular reader, CPA Suppiah Subramaniam, former Executive Vice President of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) who sat on the Finance Committee of IATA & AAPA commented, “In whatever you do collaboration with team members bring benefits as we merge the skills of each of the team members. ased on my work experience, if I found individuals want to integrate their collaborative skills, I encourage them to use the skills as soon as they can and as often as they can, and to share their knowledge with others to build a network of like-minded and skilled collaborators. Organizations need to ensure that a critical mass of employees are skilled at collaboration - for example: they pay attention to cultivating their own performance attitude, they listen attentively, they seek to better understand their own defensiveness or blind spots, and they are self accountable and good collaborative problem solvers.
I have impressed upon my students that young leaders must embrace the power of collaboration and partnership as they navigate the complexities of a rapidly changing global business. Building a network is not merely about collecting contacts: it involves nurturing relationships that can lead to fruitful collaborations. Young leaders today have the opportunity to leverage technology and social platforms to forge connections that were once unimaginable.
