Planning to drive into Singapore soon? Before loading up the car and heading towards the Causeway, there is one thing worth checking first: is your Singapore Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) still valid?
From Oct 6, 2026, Singapore will tighten pre-entry checks for foreign-registered cars entering via the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints.
But here's the important bit: having a valid VEP isn't a new requirement. Malaysia-registered vehicles already need one to enter Singapore. What's changing from Oct 6 is that your vehicle's VEP status will be verified earlier, when you submit your SG Arrival Card (SGAC), potentially flagging a problem before you even reach the border.

What Actually Changes On Oct 6?Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) says travellers entering Singapore in foreign-registered vehicles through Woodlands or Tuas will have their vehicle's VEP status verified when submitting their SG Arrival Card.
If the vehicle does not have a valid VEP, the traveller will not be able to successfully complete the SGAC submission and will instead be prompted to sort out the VEP before travelling.
The idea is simple: identify vehicles that don't meet Singapore's entry requirements before they arrive at the checkpoint, rather than having motorists discover the problem at the border.
For Malaysian motorists, that means checking your paperwork before starting the journey could save you a very frustrating drive home.
According to Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA), a Malaysia-registered car or motorcycle needs several things in order before entering Singapore.

And don't forget the Autopass when you reach Singapore. Drivers entering through Woodlands or Tuas must insert the card into the reader at the immigration booth to record the vehicle's entry, even if the barrier is already raised.
If you need to apply for a VEP or Autopass card, this isn't something we'd recommend leaving until the last minute.
LTA advises motorists to register for an Autopass account and handle their VEP/Autopass application at least two weeks before travelling to Singapore.
New applications require information including your identification, vehicle registration certificate, road tax, insurance and photographs of the vehicle.
Already have an Autopass? It's still worth checking that the card hasn't expired and that your vehicle's latest road tax and insurance validity have been updated with LTA.

Another Date To Remember: Nov 2Oct 6 isn't the only date motorists should keep in mind. From Nov 2, 2026, foreign-registered vehicles with outstanding Singapore traffic, parking or vehicular-emissions fines will face another hurdle.
LTA says that from Nov 2, foreign-registered vehicles with outstanding fines will not be able to apply for or renew their VEP, meaning motorists will need to settle the fines first. For more info click here.

Nov 2, 2026: Foreign-registered vehicles with outstanding Singapore fines will not be able to apply for or renew their VEP.So if a Singapore road trip is coming up, don't wait until you're approaching Johor Bahru to start checking everything.
Make sure your VEP, Autopass, road tax and insurance are all in order early. After all, driving all the way to the border only to get turned around isn't exactly the Singapore day trip anyone had in mind.
