Going into the 36th hole of The Masters, Bryson DeChambeau appeared to have done just enough to scrape under the cut line and make the weekend.
It was a disappointing tournament so far, having shot a 76 on day one and only cutting into that number by one stroke on Friday, but anything can happen on the weekend at Augusta National. He needed a bogey or better on the 18th to secure his spot for Saturday.
DeChambeau then found the trees on the left of the fairway, punched it into the greenside bunker, and failed to get out of the sand with his first attempt. His second attempt rolled off the green. He chipped on and two-putted for triple. Disaster.
The two-time major winner failing to make the weekend is one of the biggest shocks of this year’s Masters, and golf fans everywhere reacted to the news.

Golf fans make fun of Bryson DeChambeau after missed cut at The Masters
DeChambeau’s course management on the final hole left everyone scratching their heads, as all he needed was a bogey to make the weekend. Instead, he tried to muscle through and force a par out of the 18th, which ended his week early.
One fan said on X, “I don’t understand his mindset. That third shot has to hit the green go 20 feet past the flag. You have to make bogey. The decision to go for it on 13 from the pine straw.
Just really questionable of course management. Not hitting driver on 18.”
But DeChambeau, usually one of the best bunker players in the game, would have been forgiven for trusting his game in the sand. He hit one of the most iconic bunker shots of all time to win the US Open in 2024 and has a plaque at Pinehurst No. 2 because of it.
But this week he looked like he’d never hit a bunker shot in his life, frequently struggling to get out of the traps. That led one bemused fan to post: “That man has a plaque on one of the most famous holes in golf because of a greenside bunker shot.”
DeChambeau famously plays with irons with the same-length shafts so he can have a repeatable swing with each club. But since he played so poorly with his irons this week, fans were quick to jump on this as the reason.
“Is it just me that it’s because of the length of his wedge??? Dude struggled in bunkers 😭,” said one fan.
He also 3D printed his 5-iron which drew headlines this week, leading one fan to say, “Who would’ve ever thought a homemade sand wedge club head attached to a 6 iron shaft that was designed to hit a ball 170 yards, wouldn’t be able to get you up and down from the bunker on 18 at Augusta?”
DeChambeau came under fire on Wednesday for inviting Kevin Hart to be his caddie for the par-three contest. This led to one fan taking a cheeky jab at him:
“He and Kevin Hart will be at the Twin Peaks in Augusta signing autographs from 12-2 on Saturday. Sunday TBD.”
Another fan joked that he’d be rushing back to his YouTube channel: “Tough finish for Bryson. He’s gonna need to regroup though he has a massive 4 ball match coming up on the Bob Does Sports channel, and Joey Coldcuts is not going to be able to bail him out on the bunker play.”
Bryson DeChambeau’s greenside magic runs out
In hindsight, this was a predictable result for DeChambeau. Despite holding the lead on Sunday last year, he lost 0.69 strokes on approach at last year’s Masters, and was bailed out by his historic play around the greens.
That covered up what could have been a poor showing at Augusta, and it would not have been his first. This is now DeChambeau’s third missed cut in five years at The Masters, with his disappointing results interrupted by a T6 and a T5 in 2024 and 2025.
And this year, he wasn’t able to bail himself out after poor iron shots. Water found its level, as he lost 2.14 strokes to the field around the greens. That alone was the difference between missing the cut and making it.
Maybe this is the warning DeChambeau needs to make major changes, before he repeats another result like this.
