Converge rookie Juan Gomez De Liaño is excited to play alongside comebacking Filipino-American guard Mikey Williams for the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup, which is set to unwrap on March 11.

The former University of the Philippines star believes Williams’ reliable scoring and vast experience will come in handy for the FiberXers, who have yet to reach the semifinals since acquiring the Alaska franchise in March 2022.

“Mikey is definitely a major addition for us. His scoring and experience (will) give us another offensive weapon, and he brings a strong winning mentality,” the left-handed Gomez De Liaño told the Manila Times.

Williams will be making his PBA return in the Commissioner’s Cup. He last played in the pro league in 2023 when the explosive combo guard led TNT to the Governors’ Cup crown.

The former California State University Fullerton standout has actually led the Tropang 5G to two PBA titles. In both instances, the high-scoring guard won the Finals Most Valuable Player award.

A contract dispute, however, derailed his PBA career as TNT decided to trade Williams’ rights to Converge in exchange for Jordan Heading.

Williams, who averaged over 18 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.9 assists with TNT in 2023, will now resume his PBA career with the FiberXers.

Despite glowing credentials, Gomez De Liaño knows winning the PBA title will take more than just Williams’ individual talent.

“We know success comes from collective effort. It’s about trusting the system and trusting one another. If we stay committed to that, I believe he’ll be a key piece in our championship run,” he added.
