If you’ve just turned 60, you may now be recognised as a warga emas. And what many people don’t realise is that it’s a status that comes with access to a range of government benefits, from cash assistance and transport discounts to healthcare programmes.

Monthly Cash Assistance From The Government

For eligible seniors, Bantuan Warga Emas (BWE) provides RM600 a month to help with everyday expenses. The programme is available to Malaysian citizens aged 60 and above whose household income falls below the national poverty line.

To apply, visit your nearest Department of Social Welfare (JKM) office with the required documents, including proof of income and address.

The application process includes a home visit by a welfare officer and typically takes several weeks before a decision is made. Seniors already living in a JKM-run care institution aren’t eligible, as their basic needs are already covered there.

50% Off Public Transport

For seniors who use public transport regularly, RapidKL’s Rapid Emas concession card offers a 50% discount on LRT, MRT, Monorail, BRT, and Rapid KL bus fares. The first-time application costs RM15, made up of a RM5 card fee and RM10 of preloaded credit.

You can apply at selected Rapid KL customer service counters, including Pasar Seni Bus Hub and Conlay MRT Station, using your MyKad.

KTM Komuter also offers a senior concession with a 50% discount. As validity periods and renewal requirements may change, it’s best to check directly with KTMB before applying.

Passport Renewal Discount

Malaysian citizens aged 60 and above pay RM100 for a five-year passport renewal instead of the standard RM200 fee.

However, the senior discount only applies when you renew at an Immigration Department counter with your MyKad. Renewing online means you’ll be charged the standard adult fee.

Priority Service At Government Counters

Many agencies, including the National Registration Department, Road Transport Department, Immigration, LHDN, EPF, and Pos Malaysia, offer dedicated lanes or priority queue numbers for senior citizens.

This can be useful when handling routine matters such as renewing documents, submitting applications, or completing other administrative tasks.

Free Health Screening If You Receive STR

PeKa B40 is a healthcare support programme for B40 Malaysians aged 40 and above. It provides free health screening, up to RM20,000 in medical device assistance, and a RM1,000 incentive for completing cancer treatment.

If you or your parent already receives Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR), enrolment is automatic. There’s no separate application form.

To use the benefit, simply bring your MyKad to a registered PeKa B40 clinic. The programme is run by ProtectHealth Corporation under the Ministry of Health.

Because there’s no separate registration process, some eligible people may not realise they can use it. Checking your eligibility can help you access healthcare support that’s already available.

A Tax Relief For Those Supporting An Elderly Parent

This benefit is for the person supporting the parent, not the parent themselves.

If you’re paying for an elderly parent’s medical treatment, special needs, or carer expenses, LHDN offers a separate tax relief of up to RM8,000, on top of your own personal medical relief.

The relief can cover expenses such as a parent’s dental scaling or specialist visits, not only major medical treatments.

Free Activity Centres For Seniors

Not every benefit is about reducing expenses. Pusat Aktiviti Warga Emas (PAWE) centres provide seniors with opportunities to stay active, socialise, and take part in programmes such as recreational activities, skills classes, and health seminars.

The centres are run through partnerships between the government and local NGOs.

Registration only requires a copy of your MyKad and a visit to your nearest PAWE centre.
